Do You Hate Your Boss?

Many people site the reason they want to work for themselves is because they have “not too fond feelings” for their current superior.

Or, you read the sales letters and it’s always something like “fire your boss”, or ” sick of answering to your dreadful boss”, and many other versions of the same thought.

It got me to thinking, how many of your are trying to go into business for yourself because you just can’t stand your boss? For me, that has no impact on my decision to pursue self employment.

I’ve always wanted to work for myself, from home, so I can have the freedom to do what I want, when I want, and for my family to have that same freedom.

I actually have a great boss at work! The main reason I am still at my current employer, and haven’t left, is because of him. However, I have heard horror stories of folks and their bosses.

Just recently when I was reading Joel Comm’s book, there was a story about Mike Filsaime. Once his boss found out about his part time job online, things became hectic.

Now, I’m not saying I go around talking about my part time adventures with my boss, because that wouldn’t be appropriate in the context of our work. I do know that many people have issues with their management, and that it’s a contributing factor to why they want to work for themselves.

This is not to be confused with hating your job, which we will talk about in a future post lol. This is specifically for those that don’t really mind the work, but just can’t stand who they work for.

I know you lucky dudes, the college kids that started IM during highschool and never had to work for anyone else may not understand this. Or the self employed individual who has always worked for themselves. This is for those that do, or have worked for someone else.

How was or how is your relationship with the person or people you work for? Does it have anything to do with your drive and determination to succeed online?

My relationship with my boss is great, then again I work for my father so this isn’t really a fair topic for me.

I word at a Medical Billing company that my dad owns and have for 12 years, since I was 13, I want to work for myself not because I hate my boss, but because I don’t love my job and want the freedom to do what I choose.

Sometimes I wish I did have a boss to hate but I work for myself so I guess I can’t hate my boss. When I used to work for someone else me and my bosses had a love/hate relationship. I think a boss needs to keep that certain aspect there not to become too good of friends with anyone at work because you lose a certain amount of respect needed.

I love my boss and totally respect him. He’s a smart and funny guy and works like a mad man…I don’t feel like I could make better than he’s doing. In fact I think he’s the perfect match for his job and he’s one of the top in his field. The reason I want to work for myself is really just because I like trying my own ideas without any criticism or constraints. If it works fine, if it doesn’t work then I’ll try something else. It’s so much easier to try and experiment with out of the box ideas when you’re alone…or a small team.

Crunchy hot pockets? What’s that all about? LOL!

I am one of those people that you say cannot relate. Since getting out of college, I have worked for myself. So, I don’t hate my boss….the wife, LOL!

Seriously, I dislike the wear and tear of my profession,…so that is pushing my urgency. I guess I just don’t enjoy it anymore. It is time to move on. I own a real estate appraisal business. In addition to the market madness, it is just time to move on.

I appreciate all this business and profession has done for me. Heck, it has set me up for the IM opportunity in the first place. I have always been taking money from that business to buy resources for this one.

I didn’t grow up saying I would own an appraisal business. I grew up wanting to own a media corporation. Who would have know it would be online?

    I didn’t, but it’s all good!

@ Freddie – I’m totally feeling where you’re coming from. When I was growing up I wanted to be a singing dentist, than a fireman… I’m a musician by passion, and if 10 years ago you told me I would be building websites and networking with people on the Internet creating future business models, I would of told you to play in traffic. It’s funny how things work themselves out. God never fails to make things interesting for us!

@ Joe – Deep topic man. Everything you said in your video are topics that I think hard on almost every day. The hustle and bustle.. and I look at people on the train and think to myself “what’s wrong with these people? why are they all afraid to take risks?”

lol @ selling Google PR Backlinks on the corner to people who don’t have websites… I love when the mind goes off like that.. beautiful things happen.

Yeah man, I honestly just never saw myself “retiring” for some company! I always had a feeling of working for myself, I just didn’t know what! Who knew it would be IM? In highschool my mom had to force me to take keyboarding class, she said computers were the way of the future. I figured I didn’t need to know how to type unless I was going to be a secretary…and that wasn’t happening.

Honestly, I used to want to be a fashion designer…still self employed!

whats crackin joe? bosses tend to get a bad rep cuz of their responsibility towards work. its almost the same hate thats resented towards cops, teachers, parole agents, etc. these guys all keep us in check and make sure everything is legit. the cool bosses that i’ve had are usually the ones that don’t give a f about the company… they are just there for the bi-weekly check just like us.

I haven’t had a boss in a while, but when I did, I didn’t hate him. I was unhappy with some of the positions I was in, but at the time, I wasn’t doing anything about it. In my opninion, it’s always on YOU, not your boss, your wife, your grandmother, your dog, or your goldfish.
Stop complaining (or hating) and make a move. Trust me though, I’m not preaching. I know it’s not easy. But, sometimes you gotta be willing to sacrifice in order to get where you want to be in life. You’ll appreciate it any success that much more if it’s not “handed to you” anyway. :)

@Joe:I know what your schedule is, and you’re a great example of what I’m talking about. How many people are willing to set their alarm at 3am to work on a side project and give up “couch potato time” in the evenings in order to get ahead? Not many. Then, out of those who are willing, how many stick to it until it works? Not many.

If you do say you “hate your boss”, flip that right now and say you love your boss and smile on the way to work. You should love your boss for giving you the motivation to want to work for yourself, if that’s what does it for you. :)

I’m with Elijah, I love the randomness of “selling PR on the corner to people without websites”. Wacky thoughts are what gets me through the day lol.

    Cheers
    Jay!

You right man! But so many people use others as motivation, or let others bring them down and stop them from pursuing their goals. I just wondered. It seems like a common thought, that those trying to work for themselves hate their boss or their job. I think it’s just about true preservation.

Fortunately I have never had a boss that I haven’t gotten along with. I have found that a good working relationship with your boss isn’t only about doing good work and kissing up.. It’s really more about the same thing as keeping your customers happy… First thing to think about is what is important to your boss… what makes him tick? Talk to him, or her, about what is important to them. And, most importantly, be genuine in your interest. People can smell a fake a mile away!!

I really like my boss too. Infact, we play poker together outside of work and have drinks. I also really like my job as well. Sure, there are crappy days here and there… but overall it’s a great place. My reason for wanting to be self employed is to simply make more. Face it, as long as you work for someone else, you’ll always make less than the owner, and can only make as much as the business can allow (from profits). I think working for yourself allows you pay yourself the best and at the same time, to expand your business in the way you see fit. Hopefully with bigger profits to follow as well.

I’ve only worked for 2 companies my entire life. The main one was in the hospitality industry, but I’ve never had a problem with any of my former employers.

To my surprise, when I got my first job, I was the perfect employee.

So perfect, the boss would play tricks and make fun of me, so that I could loosen up.

I always thought the workplace was a serious place, but that wasn’t the case where I worked at.

I guess it depends on the type of person your boss is.

I think that I’d be satisfied working for myself and I think what you said that you have to make money for yourself is a key point. I want to help myself succeed in the long run rather than working towards a goal that will only benefit me partially and will benefit someone else (CEO, President) much more.

Good question joe. My short answer is you are who you are and you do what you do. If you arent hurting anyone then why be afraid to do it or speak about it. My boss knows what I do and we talk about it, and I have told him out right, Im not going to get rich or get where I want to be working for you so I have to have an alternate plan, preferrably multiple streams of income.
I goes back to the wealth quadrant, you have to have businesses, investments, real estate, and passive income.
PLUS I dont want my income level to be externally determined by forces beyond my control.
True dat money is only one aspect of happiness and Im working on happiness on a few other levels, physical, mental, spiritual. Its a whole package, not just one thing
