How do you know you got a Google page rank update

How do you know Google updated your page rank?

Well, it’s not that hard if you have the google toolbar plugged in.  However, if you don’t there are some other tools you can use for it as well. Here is a list of some of the places to check your page rank.

Free SEO Tools from SEO Logs

PageRank Script from TareeInternet

What is page rank and why do you care?

PageRank is just what it sounds like.  Google places a rank on all web pages with a value between 0 and 10, 10 being the highest.  Theoretically, the higher the page rank, the more of an authority your website is, or the more popular it is.  Many theories go into how Google determines this, but from what I can tell, these are some of the areas they look at:

  • Backlinks, the number of links pointing to your site from other sites
  • The quality of the backlinks, meaning, how important the site linking to your site is
  • Where you link to, you know, what the links on your site point too
  • Content, I dunno, this just seems to be a factor as well
  • Traffic, again, more traffic means more popularity

It’s basically a metric of reader interaction with your site, in the form of traffic, links and how many people find your site to be useful.  The more links, and the more that popular sites link to you, or the more people that link to you, the higher you will get.

But, really, this is just my opinion, and no one really knows how they calculate it.   We just guess and try to play accordingly.

Some people upset with the recent Google page rank updates

Yeah, some people lost page rank all together, some went down, others stayed the same, and some didn’t get what they thought they would.  There are always going to be some upset folks when the Big G comes through and slaps a sticker on your site.

It’s like the kid in elementary school who’s mom brings in McDonald’s and eats it in the cafeteria with him in front of all the other students that are stuck eating that school lunch.  Now, the school lunch isn’t bad ( in some cases) but, you know kids love McDonald’s so now everything seems to be crap!

What Normal Joe thinks about the update

Regardless, it’s cool, I got some PR lovin now, and it’s just a fun process to be involved in.  I’ll leave you with my thoughts in this short video….told you i’d be using the camera more :)

I don’t know about the dofollow thing, but, I think it’s good to reward the readers of a blog. I’ve toyed with the idea of taking dofollow off of the comments and increasing the top commentator slots…but, I think I like doing that, having the link love.

I just installed keyword love so if you put shane@makemoneyblogging it will only link the keywords after the @ to your site, so it builds anchor links with good anchor text :)

Ahh well, I’ll just keep chugging along.

From what I head, dofollow’ing comments drains your link juice, whatever that means…. It isn’t necessarily bad to dofollow your comments as long as the links to point to somewhere bad. So I guess in theory, if you dofollow your comments and let a comment post where the comment author links to his blog and does shady things on it, you can feel some effects from that. I guess… again, don’t work at Google, but that is how I think about and that is why I don’t dofollow links on my comments.

I never knew that you have youtube videos up and I am checking them out now… also never knew that you had a facebook account which that is awesome and glad that we have added each other.

In three months your site will be PR4 or PR5… Just remember, there is ONE way that you can get the secret of PageRank. There is one way that you can unlock the Google Code…

Solution: Get Matt Cutts drunk off his a$$ and he’ll spill the beans. Just make sure you have a flip cam or something to record it. :)

Having PageRank does help you rank better for more premium and primary keywords in Google. However, really I don’t focus to much on that. Typically with my blogs the post title is the primary keyword phrase that I am targeting. So when doing that, most of the cases all is fine regardless if you are a PR0 or a PR10.

I only noticed about the latest Google’s Page Rank change from reading about it from others. My site’s home page sits on PR4 for a year, I only notice mild changes pages deeper within, I sure watch it it’s like playing a chess game sometimes heaps of variations you want to think of. The blog is new and recent change gave nice PR’s to most posts but none to its blog-home page, must check robots.txt if it’s not disabled but it shouldn’t. What I have noticed just now, my blog is DoFollow (nofollow free) and the PR addition took place at the posts with comments, which is s good sign for the matter! But even more puzzling now. I wish the PR Mystery wasn’t mystery any more, someone could explain it, what everything is reflected by PR?

My blog was given a PR2 just because the spiders liked the size of my head in proportion to my body.

The only tips I can offer on how I got that rank is:
    – Don’t update frequently (10 days minimum)
    – Do NOT add posts that are relevant to any partiular niche or each other.
    – Don’t make the site too easy to navigate. I think people like the challenge and will keep coming back.

There’s more, but I don’t want to get into advanced stuff right now.

KEEP BLOGGING!!! That is what you can do and that is what I plan on doing.

During this update, our site went from 2 to 3, so that is great. I think it had something to do with us switching from static pages to a blog format. We made the move about a month ago or so and I hear that Page Rank, well Google for that matter, prefers blogs over regular websites.

Nevertheless, the addition is great, but I would trade it all for more traffic and a solid communicating community. That is what we are all blogging for, to help others and have others help others, right?

    Congrats again and as usual….

Yeah, and even then it may or may not help. It’s all about what the value is to the person that wants to advertise on your site. They may not care about the PR if they see the interaction or demographic your site attracts. I know awesome sites with low PR and some not so awesome with high PR. It’s all subjective really. But good PR can help more than it would hurt.

It seem to me that there slowing down the rate at which page rank gets moved from one site to another. Just a few months ago we could pass a PR 5 in less than 90 days. With these recent updates it appears to be taking closer to 6 months.

Thanks Ganesh…it’s all good though, I get readers like you that keep coming back so that makes me happy lol. I’m not sure what a higher pr would mean for me though…..it’s all good anyway.

    Hey Joe,

Your blog is now PR 2 and I’m sure if you keep on with this quality you’ll soon receive a PR 4 or more from google. Nice blog. I love it.

Hey, welcome to the site Daniel, thanks for the compliments. I’m not sure what a higher PR will actually do for me…it really doesn’t bother me, I guess it’s just another ranking system.

    Joe,

Page rank is basic math. Take the page rank of the page linking to you and multiply by 0.85. Then divide by the number of links out from the page (including internal links). This is the PR contribution to your website.

Do this for each link coming to your website page (including your own internal links). Add up your PR contributions.

Google stores this as an internal number (not 0-10) for each link contribution. The toolbar PR is update every 3 months or so. Google keeps more timely numbers in its internal database.

Page rank is only a secondary factor in ranking pages. It is wise to build the PR of your site however. If a page has very low PR, Google will not index.

    enjoy.

Welcome to the site Brian, and thanks for the tutorial! Actually, it really doesn’t bother me too much, it’s just fun to talk about because I know it bothers quite a few people.

As long as I go up and not down I’m good, even still….it wouldn’t be the end of the world.

Google pagerank has been weird for me – having pagerank does not neccerssarily mean you have traffic. I have sites that are PR2 but only get 20-30 UV a day. Having pagerank didnt seem to increase visitors. Given the choice, I’d rather have visitors rather than PR as visitors = $$$ :-)

Oh, my gosh, Joe, you’ve been robbed!

You’re not going to believe this, but my blog went from a 4 to -1. It hurts, but it’s a mistake by AOL, moving our blogs incorrectly to Blogger, when AOL shut down. Oh, I’m a cross between hurt and furious. Still haven’t been able to get it fixed yet. Google thinks I’m “redirecting.” What’s really wrong is AOL shut down my blog incorrectly (actually about 5 of my blogs incorrectly). In other words, they didn’t really shut them down, and they are redirecting to my new blogs. Redirecting of course is against Google rules. So now Google is disallowing indexing my blogs. They won’t allow my blog to be placed in their search engine under ANY keywords. This of course drives no traffic my way. Any new blogs I produce also are being penalized because they are somehow linked to my main blog now, which is linked to the “redirected” one. A total and horrendous nightmare. I believe that is how all AOL blogs are treated. I guess I better stop yapping with you and head over to google and tell them to please get on the ball and fix this mess. Perhaps I’ll go to AOL first. Hmmm. I must think fast. Ugh. A -1. :(

y blogs to appear on the pages (this hurts as I used to be at the top of several search engines

wow…you have quite the story there. I never had anything hosted with aol…and haven’t known anyone who has. That’s very interesting. I’m assuming that your sites are on the same server, which is on the same IP address…that’s why they are flagging them all. You may need to move to a new host to get away from that. Definitely sounds like you’ve got a mess on your hands. Which blog is it that you’re having issues with?

I am just confused on one point, I understand that Google weighs backlinks a lot but how does Google determine site’s traffic? Do they consider how many people are pointing to that site from their search results or what? Since, a data of traffic is usually known to the owner of the site.

Really not sure how they truly work all that, they can track web traffic and if you install google analytics on your site they can see who comes trhough.
