Joel Comm’s Click Here To Order Book ReviewI’ve been getting into reading lately, and ramping up my learning….all the while focusing on the task at hand. Â I told you guys I was going to focus on a few things at once, and I had this reiterated to me in a training last night that I am part of. Â The basic thought was “focus on one thing at a time until you get it done”. This definitely lines up with my thoughts on why multitasking sucks.
Anyway, I want to give you a review of this book, not tell you about what I’ve been focusing on! The book, Â in one word, is awesome! Seriously, I couldn’t put it down. It’s not so much of a how to book, or a course, which is why it doesn’t take away from my “focus movement” that I’ve been on. Â It’s more like a documentary in written format, and I could easily see it as an actual video documentary.
In the book Joel takes you from the very begining of internet marketing. Â From the early stages of the internet
and the early builten board systems, to the introduction of the world wide web and the web browser. All things we take as normal parts of life now…but they weren’t always that way.
Joel outlines some of the early internet marketers, and how they got started then he takes you through the years up to the present telling each story in a way that makes you feel like you are part of it. The way he weaves in and out and seems to link each person is incredible.
What I got from the book, wasn’t so much a “how to do this” but a “if you want to do this, then…”. It shows that it takes determination, and the will to move forward. Â Some of the “gurus” were normal people just like us. Â Some were educated, some were drop outs, some were failures many times over.
The underlying theme of the book is determination, creativity, and belief in your dreams. Â It’s a small investment, but I highly recommend it as a part of any marketers library. Check it out man, trust me…I’ve never been big on reading books, but a few have started to change my mind. Here’s my link for you to use if you so desire to get the book.

I haven’t ordered the book yet, but it does sound like it would be a very interesting read. Hmmmm, maybe I will go ahead and order it today. I like the videos that Joel has done on his blog with the Dot Comm story so I am sure that the book will be just as great.

Looks like you reclaimed your crown Jarret
It really is a lot different than I expected. It wasn’t teaching you any how to or nothing, just telling the history and stories of the various players in the game. I really enjoyed it and will probably give it another read. You should check it out, tell him Joe sent ya!

What’s up? Nice review Joe.
I was online back in ‘97 selling on eBay regularly, waiting for money orders and checks (yes, checks!) to arrive in the mail. lol. If it was a check, it was typical for the person to have to ‘wait 7-10 days” for it to clear before the package was sent. lol.
I dunno if you watched my viddy, but I mentioned a little of the old school where I bought collectibles from newsgroups at the time.
I’m sure that book takes you back further than 1997 though.
I wish I had been more into “internet marketing” in the earlier days (even 2000-2002 would’ve been nice lol), but it was still cool doing what I was doing.
I always have a book (the ones you hold in your hand!) on the go, but I’m usually reading fiction or biographies lately. It’s a way for me to wind down or to take a break from the computer, so I don’t really want to soak up more “business” from those as well.
Maybe I’ll check that one out though, if it’s focused more on the “story of internet marketing”.
Cheers man!
Jay

Haven’t peeped it yet! I knew you said you were thinking about it, but man, lately I’ve been late on blog reading! I need to step my game up again, I always come late to the party!
I hear you though, I’m starting to prefer physical copies of things, maybe it’s my eyes that are getting strained, but I just like to “get away” from the computer and relax, and read. This is definitely not so much about business, but it’s interesting, and you being a vet, you’ll feel some nostalgia with some of the stuff. I only have vivid dreams of it…lol, but you were in it! I need to go peep your viddy NOW!

@Normal Joe –
Haha..I don’t know if I’m a vet man…I was just selling collectibles on eBay…nothing much to do with marketing really.
I hear ya on physaical boooks. I’ve always loved reading. eBooks can’t replace the relaxing feeling of “holding” and absorbing a good book with a strong coffee! lol
NP on watching the vid. I wasn’t dropping a “hint”, just using reference. lol
Dude, trust me, I always expect that everyone is busy. If you didn’t come to my blog in 6 weeks, I won’t be mad. lol
Cheers!

You a vet man, you was making money in the 90’s online, that’s vet status to me! I was a yung buck…bout freshman or sophmore in highschool! I didn’t even know about eBay or much about the internet. I didn’t start messing around casually online ( music, surfing, shopping) until like 2001!
Yeah, that’s when I purchased my first computer and got……free AOL! I had a computer growing up, but we didn’t have the internet lol.

I’m in need of a new book, so your review came a perfect time – as soon as I get this flip money in my bank account from paypal I’m gonna pick something up – and this book seems like something right up my alley.
I’ve always been preferable to physical copies of books – I’ve never purchased an ebook. I’m a backpacker when I travel, and take public transit everywhere… subway, bus, street car, cab… so I need to have my book in my backpack ready to pull out at a whims notice.

Yeah man, it’s something about having a book in hand! I love it, and that’s why I print out ebooks, but it’s not the same. I like the “packaging” the front cover, the back cover notes…all that stuff.
As far as the contents, I’m positive you’ll like it man, it’s hype free, and very encouraging to see where a lot of these “gurus” came from. They really were just like us, networking with each other, and growing together.

@Elijah: If you’re going to start racking up PayPal money, you should get the PayPal debit card. You can go to the ATM and withdraw your PayPal funds with it as soon as you’re paid.

Great post man!
I’m thinking of buying it since it’s not a how-to book.
I would like to know the history of what I’m doing.
I’m not too sure about it though. Everything I buy something online that has to be delivered to my home (apartment) gets lost.
I just left a comment yesterday on the review Big Ben did on his blog, saying how I hate FedEx, because I have a pending claim from them, and 2 more incidents where I had to file claims.
I only used FedEx 3 times ever, all 3 times I had to file claims, because they lost the packaging.
Anyways, sorry to stray off topic, but it actually sounds like a IM book I want to read — that’s a rarity.
If I do decide to buy however, I’m coming back to click on your affiliate link Joe!

That sucks! I would hate to have my stuff lost by them man, I’m like a kid on Christmas eve waiting for stuff man. I love seeing packages and boxes come to my house!
As far as the book, trust, you’ll love it. Joel did a great job on the content. It kept me interested and like I said, it also encouraged me.
Get it, you won’t be disappointed. And hey, if you don’t like it…you could always

Hey, great review there Joe. That does sound like a good book. It sounds like some stuff I used to read way back that used to be offered from The Internet Marketing Center. I’m not sure how far it goes back, but, the late Cory Rudl used to write about quite a bit of that stuff.
I’m sure it will be interesting to anybody picking it up.
Cheers Joe!

Yeah man…Corey was discussed in the book man, I wish I could have been around when he was alive, seemed like a great guy and smart marketer. It really is a good read, something to give your mind a break from seo, traffic, conversions, and copywriting….it’s still in the same elements, but speaks on them only in the context of each marketers story and the history of our industry.

Whaaaaasup Tara! Glad you liked it…it’s a really good book, and my first “book” in this industry. It was a pleasant read, it was entertaining, as well as encouraging, but not “instructional” so to speak. I loved it, you should check it out. If you do, come back and let us know what you think.

Thanks Ryan, well, I just gave my honest review. I read the book, all the way through, and I loved it lol. I just want folks to know what it’s NOT, because what they think it may be could cause them not to purchase. But, knowing that it isn’t a “how to” book…could ease some folks into purchasing. Either way, it’s a great book and I encourage all the spend the money on it.
