The Snooze Button and Procrastination
By Normal Joe | August 26, 2008
Hey,are you new here? You should subscribe to my RSS feed miss out on any goodness!
Do you use the snooze button?
If you are anything like me, you still have a regular job at the moment. One of the things that comes with working for someone else, is the fact that you are on a schedule. Most likely there is an alarm clock involved in this schedule.
One of the most genius ideas added to the alarm clock was the snooze button! It let’s us, for small 5-10 minute increments, be lazy…slothful, it let’s us get those oh so precious extra minutes of rest.
How many of you use it? I know you do….admit it.

The problem with the snooze button
The problem I see with the snooze button, is it encourages proscrastination, and no matter what the situation, proscrastinating never fixes anything. If you have something to do…like get up out of bed hahahaha, get it done!
Putting anything off because you can, doesn’t gaurantee you will get it done later, in fact…you will most likley find yourself rushing to complete the task at the last minute. Yeah…I see you ladies applying lipstick while holding your starbucks and thrashing through main street!
Fellas, if you just get up on time…you wouldn’t need to have the newspaper in your hand, bagel in the other, all while trying to pick up your buddy that you carpool with who is now late because of you lol.
The solution to the snooze button
The solution is simply not to use it! Seriously, if you just put forth the extra effort to get done what you planned, things will be much better. I’m not saying take no breaks, or no rest, or no time off. What I am saying is, the snooze button, even the virtual one you use for completing tasks online…can create a habit that will become much harder to break.

Ahhh. Procrastination. Something that I really hate, but unfortunately, I do it. But ever since I got back in the game, I’ve always tried my best not to procrastinate. The result? I’ve gotten multiple new readers and subscribers, made over $300 online in a matter of days, and have written a new post at least every other day.

Joe,
LOL!
You really do look like you woke up late!
Hey man, sounds like you need clocky to come to your rescue.
Never heard of clocky?
Well, clocky will eliminate the awful snooze button, because clocky starts jumping around and spinning, so you have to get up in order to hit that snooze button.
There’s no way you’re going back to bed after clocky wakes you up!
Check out this video to see clocky go!

Ohhhh mannn! LOL. Dude if “The King” agrees with you then I’m down!
But seriously I have a time with procrastion myself. One of the main things that helps me get something done is to make sure you actually set a deadline.
Great work Joe.

Joe you are a nut and the King dancing is priceless! LOL!
Procrastination is the enemy of your dreams. Don’t give him a chance to ruin it for you because that is his aim.
Don’t hit the snooze, hit the gas! You have to go…..NOW! I was always told in sports growing up that THERE IS NO TOMORROW! You only have the now, the present moment. Stop playing, get it done, and prosper!
No one can do it for you.
Got to go, I got things to do to make it happen!
Thanks for the motivational moment.
I’m with Joe!

Don’t we all Sly! Good to see you back on the grind and not end up another casualty! And it’s good to hear that you’re seeing some growth and progress, keep it up…you’ll reach that 1G soon!

and not get back in the bed after I turn it off.
Yeah son, I may need clocky. Thing is this…I already put my clock across the room, I can’t turn it off unless I get up. I usually lay back down for like 5 then get up…but when you’re working hard, and tired…that’s not a good idea! You end up staying in bed! So…I’m just gonna get up when it goes off
@bigknoxy @ KC Chiefs Football -
Deadlines are always good, however…it’s a little harder when you’re the boss! Hahaha, I agree though, at least having one in place can help out a little bit.
@Freddie -
You’re right dude…thanks for the motivation
I hear ya Freddie! My kids were like… ” You KNOW him?” I was like yeah, that’s my boy! We be chillin lol. I agree man, just do it, hit da gas…let’s go..get it man, get it man

Man.. you gotta stop with this. I’m broke as hell and those piggies in blankets look maaaaaad good right now.
Procrastination is a tough one. I know for a fact that 99.99 percent of people use that snooze button. When it comes to stuff online, or things you are more passionate about, it seems it’s easier to not use it. But we have to be passionate everyday - and excited about our lives. I know most of us have day jobs and hate what we do (I don’t even have a job at the moment - still hunting) but it is crucial that we radiate passion and excitement to avoid the snooze syndrome.
Great post brother.

Good stuff Joe, as you know under your outlines I have been on a great schedule as of late, all organized and stuff, problem is you forgot to tell me I need to take breaks and breath lol, no you did and I do remember it, but everyone feels like superman at one point or another, and I guess now I just know better.
Hopefully no snooze buttons in the near future for me. If I don’t wake up they will come and get me!

I’ve been meaning to work on my procrastination, but I keep putting it off.
But seriously, this is something that I find challenging in so many areas of my life. I’ve only recently started to say “no, just do it” because I’ve got quite a pile up of things to do. The only way to knock them down is to take them one at a time.

I don’t hit the snooze button, but I’ve learned the discipline over time. lol
I’ve also learned that even though my office is only down the stairs and to the right, it’s best for me to take a shower and get dressed, the same as I would any other job. I’m not saying I’m never scrubbed out, but it works better for me if I still treat my office as “an office with a schedule” most of the time. Plus, it helps schedule time with my family a lot better that way.
It probably works for some people, but I can’t be slouchin’ around in PJs. I just wanna crawl back to bed when I do that. lol
What’s up with the king, man? That was kinda random and off the path even for Joe wasn’t it? lmao
Cheers man!
Jay

Bro, them sum bees is good yo! But yeah man, sometimes it’s not as much of a problem when doing things for yourself, but don’t get deceived lol. Doing something for yourself can still allow you to fall into the trap, just because you can do it when you want to! It’s something that takes time and work to defeat.
@Big Ben Patton -
Yeah man, lol….gotta take that breather every once and a while, I thought I put that in the manual! It’s a constant work to figure out the balance between schedules, breaks, and family time.
@Mark Sierra at MeAndMyDrum.com -
I hear you dude! It’s really not easy, but you’ll notice much improvement the more we work on it. Sometimes we don’t even realize we are doing it..as, procrastination can even be doing other things online like browsing and reading when we don’t have important tasks done for the day. I know most read email, and check blogs first…this may not always be the best thing to do. It takes time, but I’m sure with practice we can all see some fine results.
@Suite J -
You know what, I like that Jay! So many online are working for and promoting that ” work in your pjs” lifestyle…and that’s cool. But getting up and getting dressed can do wonders for your mind! You are then officially in “work mode”. I think that would help out a lot of people. I know for me, setting a specific time to work on this stuff as opposed to whenever I want, helps put me in work mode. I may try the getting dressed thing too! As for the King, that’s my homey…you should know I’m random man, do I need a reason?

I don’t have an alarm clock - my body is configured to wake up at a specific time, depending on what my schedule for the day is.

I’m glad I’m not the only one. I don’t think you have too much of a problem with the snooze button, J. You put out more blog product than most. I really don’t know how you get it all done with the job AND the family.
Keep it up, Man.

I hear that man, and usually I do too. But this is a new schedule for me, so I am still adjusting. I find myself waking up about 30 - 40 minutes BEFORE I want to
@T Edwards -
You’re definitely not the only one T, it takes practice. There are some things I snooze on man, there is only so much time and a lot to get done! I just make time for it man, that’s all. I get up early in the morn and work on this stuff before I go to work. It’s not easy, but it’s worth it. As far as posts, man, I know you got mad stuff to write about! What you can do, is when you find you have time, just write a bunch of posts and either save them as drafts, or schedule them to go out! Ahhhhh, the beauty of wordpress! Scheduled posts! Use it man…you’ll thank yourself later. Even if you don’t schedule them to go out, you can write them and just save them as drafts. There’s ways to work it, we all have to be creative with out time, no matte if we have “regular” jobs or not.

Nah, Joe, the trick is, if you’re like me, you don’t need to rush out with that bagel and newspaper… you just set the alarm 24 minutes early so you can snooze three times!

I’ve been quiet over here but my name will tell you why! Good to come back and see some more great foodstuff Joe. I was actually drooling over the piggies when I nearly choked laughing at the King!
A refreshing change as always Joe but with a good messgae to one and all. Get up, get out of bed, get ready and get on with it. You said it all when you talked about put the effort in now, get the reward back later. Too many people think it is going to be too god damn easy and THAT is why a lot fall by the wayside. Don’t be fooled by Bryans talk of 2 hour long days as it takes time and EFFORT to get there people!
What’s a snooze button? Is that for people who sleep??
