What are resale rights and what can we learn about them from the Supermarket?

What are resale rights?

Resale rights basically means something that you can take and sell for yourself.  There are a few different types of resale rights and I just want to discuss them briefly.  The three types of resale rights you normally find are Private Label, Resale, and Master resale rights.  These types of products make up the bulk of anything that is being sold by someone in a retail situation.

What are Private Label Rights. What are PLR Rights?

Private label rights are basically any type of product that you can take, change, put you name on it, and sell it as your own.  You’d be surprised how many marketers use these types of products, and it’s a great way to get into marketing and having you own product.

An example of private label rights from the supermarket, would be any store that has it’s own brand of food.  You know how each store usually has the same thing as the name brands available in their own store brand? Yep, that’s private label rights.  They had some company make them, then they slapped their name on it.

Actually, electronics is another huge example of private label rights.  Many manufacturers get their products form the same vendor, and they slap their own brand on it, and you pay more or less depending on the brand that gets slapped on.

What are resale rights products?

Resale rights are the type you are probably most familiar with.  Any time you go into a store and buy a name brand, you are purchasing that product as a resale product.  The store you purchase from has resale rights.

As marketers, there are many products that come with these types of rights.  Now with these, you can change them, and can only resale them as they are.  However, this is a little different than affiliate marketing because you get to keep all the profit to yourself.

What are master resale rights?

Master resale rights are similar to resale rights products, but they differ in the fact that you can sale resale rights to other marketers.  If I buy a book that has master resale rights, then I can sell it to you for personal use, or, I can sell it to you with resale rights.  Then you can turn around and sell it to others for personal use.

Examples from the supermarket would be things like bulk candy bars or snack cakes, individually wrapped food items and ice cream products.  Anything that is packaged and intended to be resold is master resale products.

Resale rights video example

To give you some visual aid in understanding the concept of resale rights, I decided to do a video about it.  This is just a short video that will give you some examples of resale rights products.
