Matt Bacak Retires? Yeah right!

By Normal Joe | April 19, 2008

Hey,are you new here? You should subscribe to my RSS feed miss out on any goodness!

Yo, I got an email a few days back, about a top guru giving away his most coveted seminar, valued at $5,500, for $1. Now, he said he was doing this to “get back at the people that were stealing from him”. Apparently some students of his stole his material and were selling it. He even said he was givin all the profit to habbitat to humanity.

Now, that’s not bad in itself, what I didn’t like was after purchase, I noticed that I would be charged $29.99/month for a newsletter subscription, to the newsletter he said you would get a copy of for free. This isn’t bad either, what I didn’t like, was that there was no mention of this fee on the page when you were reading about and ready to buy the product.

Now, it’s changed, and that’s apparently because many people complained. I’m not the only one who noticed this, I also got this email today about it. Mind you, I ordered this product on Tuesday, and noticed it. I almost wrote this post then, but the page had changed so I didn’t know if I had just missed it. Well, this confirms what I suspected.

Here’s and email I got from “”Stuttering John”

Here’s the story:

A few days ago, a big BIG name marketer
suddenly decided to give away his $5,555
seminar for *only* 1 cent.

Sounds like a good deal, eh?

Now get this: after you enter your credit
card details and order, you’ll be automatically
*charged* 29 bucks or so… every single
month. (Well, he did actually give you the first
month f’ree)

And what makes me crazy is this: There was
no mention about the month charge on the
sales page. You only get alerted by email after
the transaction.

(It seems he changed the sales page to tell
a tiny bit about the charge after a flood
of complaints)

Now, I don’t know if it’s legal or not.

==============
BUT IT’S DEFINITELY UNETHICAL
===============

Now here’s the part the story
gets really *weird*:

Almost every marketer and their dog
promote this program.

You know why?

First, they’re only after the commissions.
(You’d be a fool if you ever think they care
about your success at all)

Second, they want to kiss this dude’ a$…
Hoping someday he’d return the favor
and send them some sales.

So…

=========
BEWARE!
=========

If you come across this, don’t walk away…
Run as fast as you can.

Some dudes are out there to ambush you.

Talk soon,
‘Stuttering’ John (and Kevin Nguyen)

    Joe,
    You are one of the most outspoken and ethical marketer out there. I will never call you a ‘GURU”. That would be too insulting. Let me call you a “SAINT”.

    It takes a lot of courage to expose unethical scamsters and I commend you for doing just that. When too many undeserving self proclaimed con-gurus are making a name for themselves (I sure wouldn’t know why?), you are a breath of fresh air.

    Keep up the good work. You will be a star in the Internet marketing world soon. Just make sure you don’t become one of those who lose focus on why their blog started in the first place?

    Regards,
    Chris

    Hey Chris!

    It’s good to hear from ya buddy! How are things going? You know, I really appreciate the compliments, when I started out I had been burned a few times prior to “getting serious” online.

    I knew I did not want to be one of “those guys”. I am trying to keep things on the level as much as I have the power to do.

    On Matt’s behalf, he did actually give a check to the habitat for humanity, I wrote a post about it. Also, he isn’t the only one who has tried this forced continuity thing.

    I have plans to write a post about my experiences with these types of things in the future.

    hey man, you should join sezwho.com so your picture will show up! :)

    Keep up the great work.

    If you need anything. Email us
    at mattbacakretires @ gmail.com

    I just got the mail and
    this letter was in it.

    I felt you should read it
    - it’s all because of the
    people that participated
    in the $1 deal.

    I just shared it with my office
    some cheered, some cried.

    Warmest regards,

    Matt Bacak

    Thanks for stopping by again Matt, I know you read the other post I made about your donation, I even included the video. I’m just glad more marketers are stepping up and fixing issues when brought to their attention.

    I didn’t have first hand experience, but I know there was a similar issue with Joel Comm. I have nothing against Joel, in-fact, he is becoming one of my favorite marketers….. as I have nothing against you. I was happy to find that he fixed the situation with the continuity by putting a choice on the site, with two different order buttons.

    Like I said in my other post, I have no problem showing when people improve on an action that I initially wasn’t fond of.

    Continue to do what you have been, and keep putting that content in the site! Best $1 I’ve ever spent :)
