So, this past weekend I entered into a contest last minute. I thought I had missed it! Justin Brooke from Sitefling held a contest where you had to explain the importance of having a big mailing list. Â I saw the reminder email Sunday saying there was still a little bit of time, so I put together a quick video.
There were a few entries and he had to pick three winners. Â I tried to outline a few lesser talked about reasons why it’s important in my video. Â However…I understand some of the more common reasons to have one. Here are a few off the top of my head:
The Benefits Of Having Your Own Mailing List
Instant Traffic - having your own list means you control the traffic of that list and can send them where you want. Of course, this all depends on building the proper relationship
Instant Money- with a list you can create an email, click send, and start seeing the money come in, this to, depends on the relationship you have built with your list.
Product Research and Creation Opportunities – you can ask you list questions, find out their problems or what they need help with, and create a product for it
Your Own Team of Associates – it’s like having associates, human resources, and a sales team all in one. Â If you build the relationship properly, they will talk about you to others, do quality/damage control around the internet, and promote your products.
I could go on, but these are in my mind, some of the main benefits of having an email list, and having a good relationship with them. Â If they know you, they trust you, and will be more inclined to act on your advice.
So, I get some free coaching from a master list builder…I’m ready to go baby! You should go check out the other videos, and the other two winners! Here is the video I submitted.
He will be doing a case study on what he is teaching us, I suggest you tune in and learn how to build your own list, which in my opinion, is one of the most valuable assets you can have as a marketer.
Congrats on wining over there Joe. I wasn’t sure if that was you or not. Your reasons here for having an email is great. You are right about the word of mouth thing.
I think its one of the best promtions you can have because you have trusted clients that will recommend you to anyone.
I believe also that a list is a very important asset. It’s where the money is. But then again, you must know how to keep it. Your own list is like your own golden egg, you must keep it in proper condition. There are endless opportunities to make money from your own list – affiliate products, your own products, JVs and other things.

Thanks Money! Yeah man….it is, if you do it right. If you just promo and don’t build relationship, then folks will leave quicker than Cinderella at 11:59pm
Li W (5 comments) Reply: December 3rd, 2008 at 11:19 pm
True. You need to strike a balance there between promo and valuable freebies that help your subscribers. But you can’t go freebies all the time, otherwise you set a wrong expectation, and nobody would buy from you. So yeah, balance is important.

Yoooooooooo whatup J Boogey! Thanks for stopping by man, I can’t wait to get started yo! Yeah man…I tried to go unconventional in my video….but I guess I should have just kept it simple and named em all lol. Either way…I won so it’s ALL GOOD playaaaaaaaa.
The best advice I can give is not to listen to guru’s in their coaching classes, “how to spam the crap outa your list with nothing but sales”…..for $1997 per month.
Owning a list is one of the most important elements of the online marketing mix ..Owning a list is like owning Gold in the online business…big the list better the revenues for your email campaigns
The most difficult thing about building an email list is coming up with the content for your newsletter especially when you go all out writing content just for blog posts and articles!
I only have a small list at the moment (500) and i don’t really concentrate on building it, i should attack this part of internet marketing more keenly.
Normal Joe (2116 comments) Reply: December 4th, 2008 at 9:32 am
Man, that’s a decent sized list…I hope you’re building a nice relationship with them and stuff…the size isn’t as important as the responsiveness of the list.
Hey found your blog through smart wealth! I agree with you there. As they say, “the money is in the list”, and when people talk about how you can make money on demand on the internet, it’s really the power of the list at work. The list is probably the most valuable asset that an online marketer has.
Michael Henry (12 comments) Reply: December 4th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
Its also true that readers don’t want to be abused with crappy offers. I’m very leary about signing up for email lists even if they say the information won’t be shared/sold… because who really is to say it won’t?
Everything about this kind of marketing boils down to trust.
Normal Joe (2116 comments) Reply: December 4th, 2008 at 5:47 pm
I hear that man….I have unsubscribed from many lists, because I get no value, every email can’t be the BEST PRODUCT EVER lol….I don’t mind being sold to, honestly…I know people are running a business. But…just be real…don’t start every affiliate email promo with “my friend let me hook you up” I’m thinking…uhhh…..no…he didn’t I got the same email from everyone else, and I’m an affiliate too…I saw the template! hahahaha.
Li W (5 comments) Reply: December 4th, 2008 at 8:10 pm
Yeah true. Although I’m on 20 lists right now. lol Mostly from the big guys like Willie Crawford and some other less-known guys from the Warrior Forum. But they all offer pretty good value. I think writing an effective email to your list is an art in itself. There are times when everyone’s promoting the same big launch, you’ll need to think outside the box a bit or create some really unique but relevant bonus people simply can’t resist.
Normal Joe (2116 comments) Reply: December 4th, 2008 at 5:50 pm
Hey hey, welcome to the site Erwin….I don’t think I’ve seen you around here before…so, welcome! Yeah man…it’s pretty much the same thing really…except a little more intimate, and, emails get into a different part of the mind than websites/blog.
If you build this relationship right, it will treat you good
Ya, I’ve signed up for a lot of newsletters or for free stuff. I did it for 2 reasons one is that I love free stuff but the other is to study what the other guys do. Some give you great info and plug a product here and there but the others man…….they just want to push push push and most of it is garbage. Learn from it and give as well ast take.
Tis the Season for giving……right?
Congrats man
I have always known how important they are but am always too lazy to start building a proper one yet
I promise by the end of December i will have started one
Our list is small at the moment. 57. Honeslty, we have been very busy with our normal sales and just haven’t had time to work on it. But, I’ve got some things in the works that will hopefully boost it. Also, we are giving what we have a good test run today. We’ll see what happens.
Sometimes it’s also a bit of luck. Although mostly work and probably 1% luck. If you do article marketing and you get one killer article featured on a big site, you can get thousands of subscribers easily! But it does take time.
Normal Joe (2116 comments) Reply: December 8th, 2008 at 7:02 pm
Hmmm…is it really luck if you put the time in to write the articles? It’s just about putting yourself in the right positions…but that’s a little different than getting people to subscribe to your mailing list.
I need to get into this whole list building jig. I’ve never done it before but I would love to start. I’m going to have to take advice from my clients on where to start…eek!
